Tuesdays with Dorie: Tarte Noire

July 6, 2010

Silky, chocolate. Simplicity meets decadence, and you wish everything in life could be as harmonious. The photos are not very handsome representations of this particular dessert. My little point & shoot camera fell into a slice of cake. It was only about a 6-inch drop, but it felt as though it happened in slo-mo. It made the same kind of sickening ploppy noise that a scoop of ice cream makes when it hits the ground. I just stared at it for a few seconds, hoping that it hadn't really happened. The camera is fine now, but it took a long time to carefully clean off the lens, which looked pathetic-as though it had a bad eye infection made out of vanilla frosting. I took these pictures right after the clean-up so they don't quite capture the essence of this sophisticated tart. I had to thow in a close-up of Dorie's sweet tart crust, which I think is one of the best crusts to ever grace an oven. I could eat this crust naked (stop it. I'm talking about the crust itself.)

This week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe was chosen by dharmagirl of bliss: towards a delicious life. Dharmagirl, your name makes me think of the beloved show, Lost. I have this mental image of a little baker in a Dharma Initiative apron, humming 1970's music while rolling out tart dough. I know I'm stretching it, but I really miss Lost. Had Ben Linus taken a slice of this tart, who knows how things might have played out. Maybe he would have followed everyone into the church at Jack's funeral? This recipe is life altering...at least during those moments while you're enjoying it. It's unbelievably rich and surprisingly easy to prepare. Basically it's a dark chocolate ganache resting in a flaky, butter sweet tart crust. Done and done. Serve it proudly and let everyone think you spent all day putting everything together. 2. You'd never know you dropped it in cake/frosting - I completely agree - so simple. You filling is wonderfully smooth and glossy - it's such a nice contrast to the shortbread crust. (My favorite as well). Exquisite tart!

  5. I've made Dorie's crust..you're right Valerie, it's divine. The crust is all important and I start eating any pie with the crust first. :)
Love this filling too, dark and decadent! Oops on your camera...and glad you got it working. If that happened to me, my old camera would have given up.

  10. I made this once and it was awesome! Sorry about your camera but that is hilarious that it fell in the cake. I dropped my phone in cake batter once. It was not pretty.

  11. oh gosh..it's like delayed reaction after the camera dropped it huh? Don't worry, I get that all the time. Still, I agree that the crust is better eaten naked. *sniggers*

  14. Hi, Avanika. Good eye. :D I loved the look of the ganache before it hardened, so I took a picture of it in it's molten state!
