Tuesdays with Dorie rewind: Almost-Fudge Gâteau

Has anyone acclimated to post-Christmas mode yet? Every year it amazes me how something that takes weeks to prepare for can pass by in what seems like a matter of minutes. I don't know about you, but for me this is kind of a bittersweet time of year. The Holidays are such gracious hosts, introducing us to the snow and the cold, and making everything festive and harmonious. But like a fleeting will-o'-the-wisp, they disappear all too soon, leaving behind all their belongings and a lingering fragrance. The one thing the Holidays do take away with them is the truce between Winter and myself. Winter and I are suddenly left alone together, and without the diplomacy of the holidays, it's only a matter of time before the gloves come off and we turn on each other. Ever the Debby-downer, whiny Winter reminds me that it's going to moping around for several months, threatening to last until April, if it so chooses. I throw back some verbal punches, telling Winter that the only thing it's good for is being skied upon...and making Spring look all the more beautiful. This nonchalant feud usually lasts until the first thaw. Luckily I had this cake to help ease me into the coming months!

For this week's Tuesdays with Dorie we were allowed to pick a past recipe, giving me the perfect excuse to try this one! Just as indicated in the title, this gâteau is similar in both taste and texture, to fudge. In fact, I didn't find anything cakish about this. It's more of a posh, uptown brownie. You have the option of adding a chocolate glaze, but I found it to be rich enough on it's own. This should be savored in small doses with a milk filled champagne glass.   4. Hey Valerie, you are too funny! I love winter, but I remember feeling like you do after the holidays when I was a kid and teen. It was just like back to school waiting for the bus on that horribly cold street corner-very bleak after the warmth of such festivity. Me agrees;-)
    Oh, and this cake does sound like something wonderful for winter. Hot fudge in the cold is good. Yes...

  6. You are spot on about the Christmas season..it's almost bittersweet. I can't wait until next year though.

    As for your gâteau...I'm drooling. Throughouly drooling. How moist and inviting it looks!!! Brownie style cakes really tempt me.

  11. Mmm, I like your glaze-less gateau. I think it was super rich, almost too much with all the ganache I poured on top. I'm thinking maybe just a drizzle across the top.

    It is gorgeous - and when you said it was like a posh uptown brownie - you hit it on the head. It looks exactly like my favourite brownie recipe from Jamie Oliver with dried sour cherries (those are surprisingly delightful nuggets of pleasure to find buried in the gooey goodness!
    There is nothing like chocolate!!!
    I actually love this week reconnecting with friends and relaxing after the frenzy... maybe because the celebration continues - more or less - for an entire week around here.
