Tuesdays with Dorie: Strawberry-Lime Crisp

April 12, 2011

Sarah, of the lovely blog, Teapots and Cake Stands, chose this week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. And even though a lot of us searched everywhere for rhubarb (I even called a few stores, which, for someone who hates looking up numbers and talking to random people on the phone, is saying a lot) only a lucky handful were able to find the elusive stalks. However, TWD bakers have never let a rogue ingredient foil our obsessive love for baking ...especially when there are strawberries involved and it's early Spring. Big surprise, I turned to citrus. Limes and strawberries make me think of warm weather cocktails, sand-covered sandals, and windy afternoons trying to recover from both. I can't wait for summer! :)

I followed the recipe as written, save for the use of limes instead of rhubarb. All I did was rub the zest of three limes into the sugar before mixing it into the strawberries. The result was a light, perky crisp that looked forward to spring yet, because of the oatmeal crust and crumble, was still reminiscent of autumn. A sweet, gentle push into the coming months. 5. I'm not sure what it is with rhubarb this year. I haven't been able to get it from my usual sources, so I went to the nursery this weekend a bought a plant. That should solve my future supply problems. However your strawberry lime version looks perfect and I have both strawberries and limes in the garden.

  12. Lovely looking crisp! I absolutely love dishes like this, and I will bet the lime added a nice lightness to the overall dish. Beautiful.

You know, by incorporating a little rum, you would almost have a "strawberry daiquiri crisp!" :)
