Tuesdays with Dorie: Ginger-Jazzed Brownies

October 18, 2011

Autumn is the perfect season for brownies...brownies, favourite books and Simon & Garfunkel. Fresh ginger-infused brownies are an ideal match for a cozy novel and a weathered chair. I rarely make a recipe more than once, but these rich, moist brownies were worth another visit.

I just finished re-reading Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife for the second time, hoping that if I read slow enough, there would be a sequel by the time I was finished. It didn't work. For as much as I love to read, I'm not very good at getting over books. It feels like a breakup. When I'm finished reading, I'm not ready to move on for a while. My mind remains trapped somewhere within that book for several days (sometimes weeks), and just like any good relationship, there are no replacements or substitutes for the void that's left. But in between peppy bites of these gingery brownies, I decided that it's time to find a new novel to fall in love with. Any ideas?

  2. I'm glad to read your recommendation of these brownies. I love ginger (in any form) but I was never sure about the combination of ginger and chocolate. Time to add them to my to-make list!

As for a book recommendation, I'm guessing you've probably already read The Help. I loved it and it's probably my favorite book that I've "fallen into" this year. Nothing else comes to mind, but I'll keep thinking!

  8. This is my first comment here (although I've been reading you for a long, loooong time). Sorry about that!

Anyhoo, those brownies are on my list. With a clear recipient on my mind (my mom! Loves ginger!). But that's not the reason why I'm breaking my silence...

If you haven't read the Thursday Next novels (by Jasper Fforde) they are some of the best I've read in the last years. Funny, captivating, original... the first one is called "The Eyre Affair", in case you want to give them a try.

PS: I've made quite a few of your recipes and they've all come out great. 100% success rate so far.

  9. Hi Inés!
Wow! Thank you so much for letting me know that you've stuck with me for a long time...I'm always curious about my readers. :D And I'm glad to hear that you've had a perfect success rate so far!

I haven't heard of the Thursday Next novels, but I'll defiantly look them up! Thank you!

And thanks for the lovely comment. :)

  10. Oh my goodness. These look just the way I like my brownies...fudgy and sinful. The addition of ginger is perfection. That first paragraph also sounds lovely. I know I've read some good books lately, but my mind is drawing a blank right now. Always happens that way. Beautiful photos, by the way :)

  11. Fabulous brownies.
I relate to what you wrote about finishing a book. I hate to come to the end. I want it to go on and on. I get totally involved.

With that said, unfortunately, this month has left no real time to read anything other than food magazines. Hopefully, next month will be better

  12. That's also one of my favourite books. Valerie you must read Her Fearful Symmetry which is Audrey's newest novel. You'll fall in love with it too. Also, audible.com has an amazing audio version of Time Traveller's Wife. It feautres both a male and female voice. I've listened to it a couple of times.
Your brownies look perfect! Thanks for baking with me this week.

  13. Thanks Clivia! I didn't even realize that Audrey's new novel had been released!

And I'll have to check out the audio version of The Time Traveler's wife! It'll be interesting to see if their voices match the ones in my head. :D

  14. These are must-make brownies. I'll just need to convert to gluten free.

As for a book, last week I read "The Art of Racing in the Rain". I love it. I want it back from my daughter so I can read it again. I love Enzo, and you will too.

  15. Thanks for the recommendation Linda! :D

If you can make a gluten-free version of these brownies, I'd love to hear about it! Sometimes gluten-free desserts taste better for some reason.

  18. When I finish a good book, I feel haunted by it until the next one grabs my attention. The last book I remember reading was Shantaram.
I've never given chocolate and ginger much thought as a flavor combination but I'm intrigued by your brownies.
