Tuesdays with Dorie: Fluff-Filled Chocolate Madeleines

January 11, 2011

If an intelligent, sweet madeleine from a Paris pâtisserie suddenly felt the need to do something daring by moving to some exotic place- whereupon she met, and fell for a rebellious, yet caring American...this would be their love child. And yes, I know my food has a lot of love children running around this blog (it's my repressed inner free-spirit.) The dark chocolate brings the normally reticent madeleine out of her icy 'shell' and shows her that it's ok to let go of the constant struggle for perfection. She quickly realizes the importance of having fun and living life to it's marshmallowy fullness!

There is nothing traditional about this madeleine recipe. Don't get me wrong, I'll always love the delicate simplicity of the original version, but I did take pleasure in the rich, almost Hostess-like flavour of these chocolaty incarnations. They're more cake than cookie. But cute little versions of cakes, the kind you would want to eat out of a fancy box in front of a fire while reading Pride and Prejudice (or, lets face it, the Twilight series for the 6th time.)

This weeks Tuesdays with Dorie recipe was chosen by Margot, of Effort to Deliciousness. If you want to make these deviant madeleines, you can find the recipe on her gorgeous blog by clicking here! On a side note, I missed last weeks TWD 3-year Anniversary. Laurie, of Slush, and Julie of Someone's in the Kitchen chose Midnight Crackles as their recipe to mark the special occasion. I've made these cookies before and I highly recommend trying them, especially if you're a chocolate lover! Click here for the recipe. And thanks Laurie, I've learned so much from baking along with all my fellow TWD bakers. We're so lucky that you came up with the brilliant idea to start this club! Who knew you could stuff marshmallow fluff into a scalloped cookie, dip it in ganache and call it a madeleine?

  1. Haha, yes a box of these and Twilight would make my night! I love this post so much Valerie...I think I'll come back and read it again for sure (I do that when I really like certain posts, just like how people re-read books). Anyway, these madeleines are presented so professionally. And they very much are an American foodie's and Parisian foodie's love child! Hahaha

  2. Oh, Valerie, those look stunning! I'd like to see the inside too. I had all the best intentions of making these, but my entire weekend was stolen by an evil fever and I'm just getting my appetite back. Now I have another recipe to add to my rewind list.

  15. Pretty cookie, Valerie! A madeleine pan is still on my list of items to get. I really should try to find one. I have a feeling these cookies would go over very well here.
Oh, and I totally love anthropomorphism towards food (smile). I pretend my food talks to me sometimes...
