Sarah, of the lovely blog, Teapots and Cake Stands, chose this week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. And even though a lot of us searched everywhere for rhubarb (I even called a few stores, which, for someone who hates looking up numbers and talking to random people on the phone, is saying a lot) only a lucky handful were able to find the elusive stalks. However, TWD bakers have never let a rogue ingredient foil our obsessive love for baking ...especially when there are strawberries involved and it's early Spring. Big surprise, I turned to citrus. Limes and strawberries make me think of warm weather cocktails, sand-covered sandals, and windy afternoons trying to recover from both. I can't wait for summer! :)
I followed the recipe as written, save for the use of limes instead of rhubarb. All I did was rub the zest of three limes into the sugar before mixing it into the strawberries. The result was a light, perky crisp that looked forward to spring yet, because of the oatmeal crust and crumble, was still reminiscent of autumn. A sweet, gentle push into the coming months. Lime--what a great idea. I learn so much from other bakers. Have a great day.
ReplyDeleteA lovely combination of flavors, yummy!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Rosa
Sorry about the Photobucket maintenance, I'm hoping that I'll have a background again soon. :)
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love the thought of lime with strawberry - I bet this was out of this world! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what it is with rhubarb this year. I haven't been able to get it from my usual sources, so I went to the nursery this weekend a bought a plant. That should solve my future supply problems. However your strawberry lime version looks perfect and I have both strawberries and limes in the garden.

I bet this was really good with lime. I used frozen rhubarb with worked perfectly. I really liked this crisp!
ReplyDeleteIt looks good and crispy!! Great job!
ReplyDeleteI see that you've got your background back, looking as great as always. This crisp looks just wonderful, and the strawberry lime combination sounds fabulous.
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm strawberries and lime - what a great idea! It definitely makes me think of a warm beach vacation somewhere :) Your crisp looks wonderful!
ReplyDeletei love strawberries and citrus together, and I bet the lime added a bit of tartness to the sweet strawberries. Your site looks nice--I came by last night and was a bit alarmed! Yes, I am rhubarb-obsessed.
ReplyDelete:)
It seems to be everywhere now that I am without a kitchen for the month!
@Mary, Sorry about the strange background yesterday, luckily Photobucket was able to figure out the problem!
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine not having a kicthen for a month! But I'm sure it will just make you appreciate it even more once it's back in running order. :)
Lovely looking crisp! I absolutely love dishes like this, and I will bet the lime added a nice lightness to the overall dish. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteYou know, by incorporating a little rum, you would almost have a "strawberry daiquiri crisp!" :)
yes, i usually think of crisps as an autumn dessert, but it was great with spring-time fruits.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like one for my Mum. Thanks so much; I'm going to surprise her with this one day soon!
