Tuesdays with Dorie: Chocolate Spice Quickies
September 6, 2011
Anything that includes the words "fast","easy", or "kid-friendly" in it's title, makes the challenge-loving, microwave-loathing baker in me cringe a bit. Plus, when a recipe claims to be fast and easy, it also induces a deep-seeded fear of potential disaster...one that ends with me hanging up my whisk and spatula in shame. So because of the 'quickie' infused title, I did not have lofty expectations for these cookies. However, this is another example as to why you should always, always, always-read through a recipe before thumbing your oven mitt at it. (or is it nose? that never made sense to me.) They were not as "quick" as the title indicates. Easy, yes. But because of a much needed refrigeration time, not very fast. I was happy.
The cookies turned out to be a huge success! They were an irresistible cookie/brownie hybrid. Their texture was soft, rich and moist, but you felt as though you could eat more than 3 without feeling guilty (try doing that with actual brownies.) Since I was low on allspice, I added the zest of one orange to the dough. I love the combination of chocolate and orange! I could go on about it, but I won't. :-D
This week's Tuesdays with Dorie recipe was chosen by Jessica, of the lovely, cleverly named blog, My Baking Heart. You can find the recipe by clicking here. Thanks, Jessica! This was such a deliciously pleasant surprise.
And please be sure to visit the other Tuesdays with Dorie members (some were very creative with their cookies)!

Mmmhhh, they look so good and sinfully addictive!

I love the fact you were happy because the cookies WERNT quick! The lazy baker in me would be the opposite but at the same time I get much more satisfaction out of something a little more taxing (as long as it works out obviously!)
ReplyDeleteThese look absolutely lovely and i think i would keep your substitution of the orange if i was to make them, sounds deeelish :)
I've skimmed past this recipe so many times. The word "quickie" in the title always made me think they wouldn't be worth trying. Knowing you liked them is a huge recommendation, and I love the idea of adding orange zest!
ReplyDeleteChocolate and orange, cookie and brownie, all my favorite words describing one treat- I can't resist and will make these this afternoon! Great job!
ReplyDeleteYum they look so perfect. I made them into drop cookies so they don't look as good as yours, but they sure are tasty! Im glad you enjoyed this recipe!
ReplyDeleteI love your pictures!
Beautiful cookies, Valerie! I bet they were lovely with orange zest. Thanks for baking along with me this week! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos! I'm glad they were a hit.
ReplyDeleteI like your addition of orange peel. Nothing better than chocolate and orange. Beautiful cookies!
ReplyDeleteWhat beauties!!! I agree - any "refrigerator" cooky isn't exactly "quick" - especially with the fridge time! But these look heavenly - and love the orange adaption. So few people pair chocolate with fruit flavorings!
ReplyDeleteLovely ideas on these...those little ribbons add so much cuteness to a photo, and believe me, these cookies were hard to make cute...lol!
ReplyDeleteO YUM!! Orange. Good idea.
ReplyDeleteThese look marvelous, Valerie! I love the idea of orange, chocolate AND spices! Also, the idea of having them in log form is appealing....you can bake them when you need them.
ReplyDeleteOrange sounds great with the chocolate! Your cookies are perfectly round and beautifully photographed, too. Easy and quick sometimes don't go hand in hand. I like the ease of preparation and I love being able to pull the dough out of the refrigerator at my leisure to bake them.
ReplyDeleteGotta love that orange/choc combo!
