Tuesdays with Dorie: Honey-Nut Scones

November 1, 2011

I hope that everyone had a fun Halloween!

As usual, I had absolutely no trick-or-treaters. So not only am I left with the residual guilt of candy corn hoarding, but now I have a crooked, ceramic bowlful of Smarties, Jolly Ranchers (my other weakness), and raisins (yes, I'm one of "those" people.) I'm beginning to wonder if I'm turning into the crazy cat lady. Are 3 cats the default qualification number, or am I saved by the fact that I'm still in my early 30's? I pondered this and other deep thoughts as I devoured a scone while watching "House". I absolutely ♥ that show...it sometimes makes me wonder if I missed my true calling (then again, so did "Alias" and "Ally McBeal").

After several days of noshing on candy corn, scones were a welcome reprieve from the cloyingly sweet taste of pure sugar. In fact, the recipe doesn't even call for sugar. These scones get their subtle sweetness from a mere 2 Tablespoons of honey. And even though mine were a little bit on the dry side, it was nothing that a cup of hot jasmine tea couldn't fix.

Since we are nearing the end of Dorie's book, Tuesdays with Dorie is going to be a little bit different this month. Instead of one recipe per week, we will get to choose between two, or, if we're feeling ambitious, we can do both! If you would like the recipe for these honey nut scones, please visit Jeanette, of The Whimsical Cupcake. This week's other option was a far Breton. For the recipe, please drop in on Nicole, of Cookies on Friday.

Thanks Ladies. It was a difficult decision that came down to a simple lack of grocery money...something that I'm sure I'd run into even if I were a doctor or a lawyer. :D

  4. No sugar? That really is a welcome announcement the day after Halloween. Why, oh why was I born with such a sweet tooth?

  5. Cute post...candy and TV! My kind of night! Cats and raisins..hmmm... ..I think it's cool :) Im glad you had a fun Halloween evening!
Your scones turned out beautiful. I agree with the dryness of them. I drenched mine with butter and jam and that took care of that issue!

I also enjoyed that they didn't include sugar. I love the chance to use honey.

  10. About the cat lady thing - you have to be at least 50 years old and friendless. The only way you can qualify before that is to be certifiable :-)I really loved your post today. The scones look delicious. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

  15. Hi Priyanka,
I know what you mean, scones are not very photogenic. Most of the time, mine look like hockey pucks, so thank you for the lovely compliment. :D

  17. The pre-Halloween season is all about candy corn for me. It's the one time of year I go absolutely crazy with a candy. I even just bought some bags, the big ones, on clearance at Target. When they go, I am done till next year. :). I have been such a baking slacker, but I did want to make these scones. They look so good!

  18. Lovely scones and presentation. I too have a ton of candy left over - and I am dropping it off at a "Candy for the Troops" drive today. I can't have it around anymore!
