Kids' Thumbprints

January 2, 2012

Happy New Year! I hope the first few days of January have been kind. Even though I never make any resolutions, a new year feels like a crisp, fresh sheet of paper sitting beside a typewriter at a desk in a sunlit room. There's a calm, clarity of thought that allows us to write a new story without the burden of a year's worth of worries.

Last month was a blur of ovens, eggs, flour and mixing bowl, and in all the chaos, I never got around to making the last Tuesdays with Dorie recipe. (I really dropped the ball on that one.) So hopefully everyone is up for eating just a few more cookies...Dorie Greenspan actually picked this herself!

I can't thank Dorie, or the entire TWD group enough for all the lessons that I've learned over the past 2 years. Baking has always been near and dear to me, but until I joined Tuesdays with Dorie, I had never truly immersed myself in the art. (Yes, it is a form of art.) Now I'm practically a tart-making expert! Pie crusts, I'm still working on...but we'll be tight eventually. Dorie has a gentle way of guiding you through her recipes, and even if a few of them fall apart, I can picture her laughing it off, and encouraging me to try again. She is a true icon of the pastry world.

Okay, what about the cookies? Well, they're the perfect way to cap off a two year journey. And despite the title, adults will love these cookies too! The recipe is short, sweet and simple. It's basically a scrumptious peanut butter cookie recipe with the added flare of filling and a coating of nuts. Even though jam was called for, I decided to fill my cookies with chocolate chips. They're tender, nutty, and beg to be enjoyed with a glass of cold milk.

For the recipe, please hop on over to Dorie Greenspan's site. Or, grab a copy of her classic book, Baking: From My Home to Yours. And if you haven't done so already, please take a look at the final recipe from other TWD bakers. xo

  7. Congratulations on finishing the journey! Your cookies are just lovely, but I'd probably do half of them with jam. I know that either way, my family will love them!

  14. I do LOVE that book! My favorite of the recipes I've tried was the pecan powder puffs. They were like little balls of buttery goodness. Happy New Year to you!
